In Remembrance
Lorelei Anastasia Lassen
Bestselling novelist, beloved friend, and an incomparable voice.
She taught us to look closer.
We are still looking.
Seven Years Without Answers
Seven years ago, Lore Lassen disappeared under circumstances that have never been explained.
She left no note. Her body has never been recovered. Despite countless leads, reported sightings, and years of searching, no evidence has established what happened to her or where she went.
Lore has now been declared legally dead in absentia.
That declaration allows her literary estate to move forward. It does not provide the certainty that ordinarily makes mourning possible. It does not resolve the circumstances of her disappearance, and it does not end the search for answers.
We continue to hope, as we always have, that Lore will return.
If she cannot, we hope the truth will.
What She Left Behind
At the time of her disappearance, Lore was deep into a new novel. The few people permitted to read the manuscript believe she was writing the finest work of her career.
She did not finish it.
For years, we believed that was where the story ended.
We were wrong.
Lore had assembled the manuscript alongside notebooks, marginalia, research, photographs, recordings, computer files, removable drives, and other working materials.
As the archive was catalogued, we discovered coded writing, encrypted files, and password-protected pages within the author website her team had helped her maintain throughout her career.
Some of it has been recovered.
Most of it has not.
What we can now say with certainty is that Lore assembled these materials herself before she disappeared.
She called the collection VORLASS.
We have made the decision to publish it.

One of Lore's favorite photographs. She said it captured her creative process exactly:
“It only looks like chaos because you can't see where everything connects.”
The Last Known Writing
On December 3, 2026, Lore dined alone at the Linder Room. She was last seen there shortly before closing.
When her table was cleared, a server found this napkin beneath her coffee cup. The handwriting was later authenticated as Lore's.
No later writing has been found.

As Lore Left It
What you will be holding is not a reconstruction of Lore's final novel.
We have not speculated on the missing ending. We have not completed unfinished passages or quietly chosen among competing drafts.
Where Lore crossed something out, you will see it.
Where she changed her mind, both versions remain.
Where her notes contradict one another, we have left the contradiction unresolved.
Where we cannot read her words, we hope you can.

One Recovered Page
This page was recovered among Lore's working papers and preserved exactly as she left it.
The printed words belong to her unfinished final novel.
So do the revisions.
The questions remain unanswered.
We believe the keys may already be there.
We haven't found them.
Maybe you will.
To Lore's Readers
For years, Lore's editors, colleagues, friends, and publishing team have tried to understand what she left behind.
We have reached the limits of what we can do alone.
So we are turning to the people Lore trusted most with her stories.
You. Her readers.
Lore read your theories. She delighted in what you noticed. She welcomed the worlds you built beside hers.
We believe she would want you here now.
- Read the manuscript.
- Follow the references.
- Search the margins.
- Tell us what you find.
If you can hear where the story was going, continue it.
Selected discoveries, theories, and reader-written continuations may become part of the Lore Lassen Estate's ongoing effort to reconstruct her final work.
Perhaps you will see what we missed.
