Boaz Able is a good man.
Ask anyone.
A devoted husband. A loving father. A pillar of his church and his community. He married the woman he loved when she became pregnant and has spent the years since trying to live a life worthy of the grace he was given.
His daughter, Magnolia June, is the apple of his eye. His son is quieter. Difficult to reach. A boy who rarely speaks and seems content to remain somewhere beyond his father's understanding.
Then the water comes.
When the flood recedes, it leaves more than mud and ruin behind. Outsiders descend on the wounded town: speculators circling family land, contractors preying on desperation, scammers, thieves, and men who recognize disaster for what it can be to the right kind of person.
An opportunity.
Boaz watches the place he loves being picked clean.
They prey.
He prays.
And he gets an answer.
Be still, and know…
At first, what follows feels like protection.
A bad man disappears.
Then another.
The town grows a little safer. The vultures become a little more cautious. And Boaz begins to wonder whether this is what God has been asking of him all along.
Afterall, scripture is full of imperfect men called upon to do terrible things in the name of deliverance. Men who became instruments of judgment when ordinary goodness was no longer enough.
Boaz believes God has chosen him to become one of them.
To save his town.
To protect his family.
And somehow, when the killing is done, to still have a soul worth saving.
He believes God will show him the way.
All he has to do is be still and know.
